CHEAP TRICK - HEART - JOURNEY : Live In Concert!!

Ford Amphitheatre, Tampa, Florida
July 30th, 2008

Last Night my wife, son, and brother all loaded up for a road trip to Tampa after winning tickets to one of the hottest tours on the circuit this summer. This was the fifth time I'd seen HEART, and the third time both for JOURNEY and CHEAP TRICK. I've been a longtime fan of Heart, and always enjoyed Cheap Trick, but I've never been a huge Journey fan - but I must say they rocked pretty hard last night, and their new singer, Arnel Pineda was pretty awesome, a dead ringer for Steve Perry (read below).

Info About Arnel Pineda from Wikipedia:

Videos of (Arnel's band) The Zoo performing cover songs by Journey, Survivor, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Air Supply, The Eagles, Kenny Loggins and other popular acts from the 70s, 80s and 90s, began appearing on YouTube.com in February 2007. On June 28, 2007, Neal Schon of Journey contacted Noel Gomez, a longtime fan and friend of Pineda who uploaded many of these videos, to ask for Pineda's contact information. Schon sent an e-mail to Pineda inviting the latter to audition for Journey. Pineda initially dismissed the e-mail as a hoax, but after being persuaded by Gomez, he finally replied to Schon's e-mail. Ten minutes later, Pineda received a phone call from Schon. On August 12, Pineda, along with his manager Bert de Leon, flew to Marin County, just north of San Francisco, for a two-day audition. The star-struck Pineda was welcomed warmly but he described the audition as "nerve-wracking, tense".

On December 5, 2007, Pineda was announced as the lead singer of Journey. CNN Headline News ran the story as part of their "News to Me" segment.

Pineda debuted as the lead singer of Journey on February 21, 2008 at the Viña del Mar International Song Festival held at the Quinta Vergara Amphitheater in Viña del Mar, Chile. Videos of the Vina del Mar performance are available at the Festival's home page and on YouTube.

Chilean media acclaimed Pineda's performance (translated to English): "The new vocalist fit very well with the band, his vocal aptitudes shining through, which are very similar to the legendary musician of the band, Steve Perry." Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain described Pineda's performance in a radio interview: "We went to Chile just recently, where we had never played and they went crazy, they absolutely went nuts...Arnel's first show - talk about a stressful thing - we had a televised concert for 25 million people...Is the guy a winner? Yeah, he's a winner. He's a clutch player."

Journey returned to the US for a private Remax Convention event at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on March 6, 2008, then performed at Las Vegas' Planet Hollywood on March 8, 2008 (this concert was recorded and used, in part, for the Revelation DVD).

After Cheap Trick's set, just after Heart started, I asked my boy if he wanted to roam around and see if we could get some good pictures. As we rounded the left side of the stage a security guard said we should not block the aisle, then motioned to the front of the stage, he said he could let Dylan go to the front/center of the stage to take pictures for a few minutes if he liked - SURE! we said.

We he was done he ran back up to me, gave the guard a high-five and we both said thanks. The guard pulled me aside and said he could come back to shoot a few of Journey later if we liked. Kool!

All in all it was a hot show, and we all had a great time, and my wife loves her favorite band agian!

Below are some the photos our budding young rock photographer took! Enjoy.

JACK WILLIAMS IN CONCERT!

LEU GARDENS
ORLANDO

Sunday July 27th, 2008

"Jack is the best guitar-player I've ever heard."
- Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul & Mary)

"...one of the strongest guitar players in contemporary folk."
- Sing Out!

Since he first performed at out coffeehouse, Kool Beanz, nearly 10 years ago, I've become a huge admirer of his work and performance. Of the 4 Jack Williams CDs that I own, there are a number of tracks that I can count as some of my favorite recorded music, and can often be heard on my radio show. Here are just a few: High Cotton; Buckets of Rain; Hometown Boy; Eternity & Main; Outlaw's Dream; Across The Winterline; The Old Buckdancer's Gone; Mama Lou.

I'll re-cap the concert for you Monday Night on my radio show AN ACOUSTIC RECORD on WFIT 89.5fm Melbourne, Florida. Listen on-line: wfit.org

Jack's latest album is called "Don't Let Go", named for a hit song from the 1950s by Roy Hamilton. With these 22 tunes Jack pays tribute to the musicians, singers, songwriters, and showmen from the past 80+ years that influenced his style. Songs as diverse as "AUNT HAGAR'S BLUES" (by W.C. Handy)- as performed by Louis Armstrong and His All-Stars; "YOUNG AT HEART" (by Johnny Richards & Carolyn Leigh) as performed by Frank Sinatra; Jesse Winchester's "BILOXI"; George Shearing's "LULLABY OF BIRDLAND"; "KING HARVEST" by Robbie Robertson / The Band; "DADDY'S HOME" by Shep & the Limelighters; Duane Eddy & Lee Hazelwood's "REBEL ROUSER"; "DELICADO" (by Valdir Azevedo) as performed by Percy Faith & Orchestra; and my favorite - "A SALTY DOG" - Gary Brooker & Keith Reid / Procol Harum. The CD is made all the more interesting by the fact that all these wonderful pieces employ the same tight ensemble throughout - acoustic bass, guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and viola.

"Don't Let Go" Song List:

AN ACOUSTIC RECORD

July 21, 2008

I'M BACK ON THE AIR!

MONDAY EVENINGS 10pm - MIDNIGHT

I'm very pleased to announce that starting TONIGHT I will be back on the Radio Waves! The good people over at WFIT (Public Radio for Brevard County) have offered me a time slot to revive my radio program (know called) AN ACOUSTIC RECORD with "Java" John.

After a wonderful in-studio introduction Sunday Afternoon by Fred Migliore, on his FM Odyssey show (10am -1pm Sundays), I will officially begin tonight...bringing you the best from 50 years of Rock n Roll, Folk, Soul, and Blues, not necessarily always acoustic, but (I think) always interesting - crossing genres, generations, and the grooves.

I also have a penchant for live music, so I'll be playing plenty of live album cuts and bringing special guests in the studio to perform live for you. Some previous in studio guests have included: Larry Coryell & Tracey Piergross; Freebo; Jack Williams; Monica Rabino; Al Scortino & norm mcdonald; Simone; Billy Chapman; Bill Rice; Lathan Hudson; Sheryl Paige; Robin & Eddy; Bill & Eli Perras; Alesandra Valenzuela; Moon Shine Blue; and Laura & 7 to name a few.

In the past, I've also had the pleasure of interviewing some of my heroes over the phone, and I plan on bringing you more of those as well. Past interviews include: Dave Davies (Kinks); artist Peter Max; Arlo, Sarah Lee, and Nora Guthrie; Pete Seeger; Legendary Producer Keith Olsen; Ray Manzarek of The Doors; Ian Gillan of Deep Purple; Mark Farner (Grand Funk); Mark Volman (The Turtles); Charlie Daniels; Ray Stevens; James Lowe (The Electric Prunes); Question (? Mark and the Mysterians); Livingston Taylor; Kate Taylor, and Alexa Ray Joel (Billy’s daughter) and many more.

So remember: Please Tune In Monday Nights from 10pm - Midnight for An Acoustic Record with "Java" John! ....and if you are not a local - you can listen on-line: www.wfit.org

Many Thanks Todd, and all the folks over at WFIT for bringing me on board! I'm pleased to be on board.

Along with Fred Migliore's FM Odyssey, there are many other great programs on WFIT, some of which I've been listening to for years! Including - Blair Clark's C'est la Vie; Rob Killam: Celtic Tapestry; Bill Stuart: Folk, Bluegrass and More!; Reverend Billy's Revival; DJ Joni-O: The Stray Cat Lounge; and Jack Simpson's Jazz on the Beach. Tune in and get a taste of radio the way it's supposed to be. Remember - ALWAYS SUPPORT PUBLIC RADIO!

UPDATE:
ARTICLE From The FLORIDA TODAY NEWSPAPER 08/01/08

Serving Up Some Tunes by Breuse Hickman

Back in the day (circa 2000) we loved hanging out among the acoustic elite at Kool Beanz in Cocoa Village. Unfortunately, the coffeehouse closed in 2003, but owner "Java" John Goldacker, above, has remained a force on the local music scene. And now you can feel that vibe again thanks to WFIT-FM (89.5). His show "An Acoustic Record" airs from 10 p.m. to midnight Mondays. His show will cover 50 years of rock 'n' roll, folk, soul and blues. Despite the show's title, Goldacker says you might hear a little electric action as well. After all, it is his show.

WFIT seems is the perfect fit an old soul like Goldacker, whose laid back style probably would not fit the voice tracking culture of corporate radio. The radio's format also allows him to bring in local artists who will play their music live in the studio.
"I basically play what I want," Goldacker said. "Particularly live recordings. I'll bring my music to the studio and decide then what I'll play."

Goldacker was introduced a few weeks ago to the WFIT audience via Fred Migliore, whose "FM Odyssey" show airs 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sundays on WFIT.
You can expect some overlap among artists and genres, but that doesn't make them similar in appeal. "What drives our programs is personality," Migliore said. "It goes back to the early '70s when FM was a rock force and you tuned into certain (music) shows because you liked the DJs."
